Rating
Based on a robust rating system, the Carbo medals reward the maturity level of the company's climate strategy as assessed over the last 12 months.
The rating reflects an overall comparison across all company sizes and sectors. The positioning of the assessed company is based on a multi-criteria rating covering three major categories:
- MEASURE (40%): criteria assessing commitment to comprehensive emissions calculation
- ACT (45%): criteria recognising efforts to decarbonise activities
- RAISE AWARENESS (15%): criteria attesting to the level of stakeholder awareness.
Carbo medals
The medal is based on a ranking of all companies using Carbo. The ranking is recalculated each season. The points awarded for the various criteria are mainly valid for one year. When you complete your first assessment, you earn and retain points for one year, helping you to position yourself in the ranking over several seasons.

Subject: [Your company name] wins the Carbo medal 🏅
Hello,
We are proud to announce some great news: [Your company name] has just won the Carbo medal [medal level and season]! 🎉
🔎 What does that mean?
It means that our partner Carbo ranks us among the top [x]% of companies most committed to decarbonisation. This is true recognition for the work of our teams and our CSR commitment!
💡 Carbo's Carbon Strategy Rating® assesses companies' carbon initiatives using a rigorous methodology, defined by a committee of experts, based on three essential pillars:
- Measure: by calculating our carbon footprint,
- Act: through a concrete and evolving decarbonisation plan,
- Raise awareness: by involving our employees in this transformation.
This award reflects our ambition to build a more sustainable future — with energy, commitment and determination.
- Addition of the medal to email signatures, whether in an existing layout or not
💡 For use in email signatures, for example, we recommend reducing the size beforehand.
Other ideas for use:
- Add a page to your CSR report or environmental report to strengthen your arguments.
- Include your responses to calls for tenders to highlight your commitments.

So it's up to you 😉
The 4 eligibility requirements
1. EFFECTIVENESS
Have an audited, compliant and recent carbon footprint assessment
You must have fulfilled all the conditions for having at least one carbon footprint assessment verified by our experts and declared compliant with the Bilan Carbone® methodology. This means, in particular, that the vast majority of direct and indirect emissions have been covered, and that the latest assessment was carried out and validated less than 12 months ago.
2. MATURITY
TOP 30% of audited companies
A comprehensive rating is calculated at the end of each assessment process, based on the company's percentile ranking compared to that of all companies audited over the past 12 months, across all sectors of activity. The assessed company must then obtain a rating that places it in the TOP 30% of companies assessed by Carbo over the past 12 months; failing which, it will have to continue its efforts to obtain its medal.
3. COMPREHENSIVENESS
Demonstrate a 360° commitment
A successful low-carbon transition requires a holistic approach. Our assessment process gives priority to companies that demonstrate a minimum level of commitment:
- by obtaining an overall score of 20 or higher over the period;
- and/or by achieving a positive score in at least two of the three categories (measure, act, raise awareness).
For example, a company that focuses all its efforts solely on carbon accounting, without being able to demonstrate that it is complementing its approach with at least one action in terms of reduction, collective contribution, transparency, reporting, publication or training within its ecosystem, may not be eligible for a medal.
4. COMPATIBILITY
Carrying out activities compatible with our mission
With a proactive and caring ecosystem, Carbo works every day to accelerate environmental awareness in order to reduce our carbon footprint now. To be eligible, the company must not engage in transformative activities for which it is estimated that only a profound change in model would enable it to be an active contributor. This is the case, for example, for companies specialising in the extraction of high-carbon energies, aviation, arms production, etc. This framework is reassessed every six months by our committee of experts.
🚨 The awarding of a Carbo medal does not constitute certification or official validation of the company, its products or services. Nor does it guarantee that these are more sustainable or eco-responsible than those of other market players. While the medal recognises a proactive approach to measuring and reducing a company's impact, there is always room for improvement in terms of management, low-carbon strategy, indicator improvement and the level of transparency in publications and reporting exercises.
Integrity and quality of the assessment
Traceability and confidentiality
Our IT system not only ensures rigorous traceability of the process, but also guarantees strict data confidentiality. No information can be shared without the prior consent of the company being assessed.
Scientific committee
A scientific committee, composed of experts in carbon footprinting and decarbonisation issues, data analysts and a panel of member companies from the Carbo community, reviews and may update the assessment process and methodology on a quarterly basis to reflect best practices and the latest standards.
Quality control forms
Internal quality control forms are issued at each stage of the assessment process and are used to identify quality issues and define training and internal corrective actions.
Complaints procedure
Carbo has a complaints procedure that allows you to request additional information about your assessment from your Carbo coach.
